Proposal
Objective
For many people living, working or studying in a big city , they often find themselves, their
families and friends in a position where they would get disconnected from the external natural
environment. Examples would be long hours in the office, lectures, studios without windows.
Prolonged exposures to such disconnections can lead to an over stressful environment and the
Portable Window seeks to bring a balance to such a situation and also bring people living in the
city closer to nature by the use of an ambient display. This device can also aid users to reexamine
the environment around them. Such an ambient display is non-intrusive and does not require the full
attention of the user. This is a cognitive psychology phenomenon known as pre-attentive processing
in which unconscious processing of information that takes place prior to awareness of what has been
heard or seen.
Rationale
I always have a huge interest in human interactions with everyday objects on a personal level and
how I can solve some of the questions that I have regarding these everyday-ness or even design
something that could improve our everyday lives.
By researching and developing this project, it could potentially improve the psychological and
emotional well being of people who are affected by the problem of disconnected-ness.
